2022.01.23 21:32 Zizzac Is this secondary hypogonadism?

So I have multiple TBIs from when I was younger that I believe are the source of my depression and attention issues but I think the way that they are causing these symptoms is by disrupting my endocrine system. So on or around mid august I spoke to my doc and we did a full panel to see what was going on:
Test Result Code Result Name Results Out of Range Flag Units Range Site Stat
COMPREHENSIVE METABOLIC PANEL 2345-7 Glucose SerPl-mCnc - 112 - mg/dL 65-99 IG F
COMPREHENSIVE METABOLIC PANEL 2345-7 Glucose SerPl-mCnc Fasting reference interval between 100 and 125 mg/dL is consistent with prediabetes and should be confirmed with a follow-up test.------
VITAMIN D,25-OH,TOTAL,IA 1989-3 25(OH)D3 SerPl-mCnc - 23 - ng/mL 30-100 IG F
VITAMIN D,25-OH,TOTAL,IA 1989-3 25(OH)D3 SerPl-mCnc Vitamin D Status 25-OH Vitamin D: Deficiency: <20 ng/mL Insufficiency: 20 - 29 ng/mL Optimal: > or = 30 ng/mL For 25-OH Vitamin D testing on patients on D2-supplementation and patients for whom quantitation of D2 and D3 fractions is required, the QuestAssureD(TM) 25-OH VIT D, (D2,D3), LC/MS/MS is recommended: order code 92888 (patients >2yrs). See Note 1------
I thought we did a testosterone panel on this one but its not showing up in my portal so don't know my original levels. They did do a thyroid panel but they are all in the normal range. I know I remember my SHBG is already low so taking Tongkat Ali is a waste of money.
I have been taking 50,000iu D2 once per week per doc's orders for several months now. Doc felt ok with my glucose but I'm not. Thinking about asking for metformin or possibly taking berberine. Doc also prescribed androgel. Been taking 1 pump (20.25mg) per day for at least 3 months now and just took a testosterone test and I'm still below range. Results from end of Dec below:
DHEA SULFATE 4225 DHEA SULFATE - 517 - UG/DL 160-449 MAIN F
TESTOSTERONE, BIOAVAILABLE, FREE AND TOTAL 41431 TESTOSTERONE, TOTAL - 168 - NG/DL 300-1080 MAIN F
TESTOSTERONE, BIOAVAILABLE, FREE AND TOTAL 41432 SEX HORM BIND GLOBULIN - 11.7 - NMOL/L 16.5-55.9 MAIN F

TESTOSTERONE, BIOAVAILABLE, FREE AND TOTAL 41435 TESTOSTERONE,% FREE CALC - 3.0 - % 1.6-2.9 MAIN F
I obviously didn't respond much to the gel. Do these results indicate secondary hypogonadism? Should I get myself in front of an endocrinologist? What questions should I ask?

2022.01.23 21:32 Nobody_Likes_Shy_Guy Americans, did your school give out GPA rankings during the school day too?

I’m pretty sure GPA and rank is a nationwide thing as most American schools base admissions around it. However at my high school they would give us our rankings right before lunch. This was normal to me at the time but now that it’s been years since I graduated I’m starting to realize how damaging that is.
Grades are EVERYTHING when you’re in school, and what you’re doing there is giving kids what is basically their “worth” compared to each other, right before they all get together in the same place. You’re practically begging for students to develop complexes about their grades. I remember one day in my English class our teacher was gone, and she gave us some online quiz over the book we were reading at the time that was basically a gimme, it was super easy. There were kids in that class who spent the entire period “doing” it (finished it in 10 minutes then stressed over it for 30) because they were worried about getting a question wrong and having their GPA drop a hundredth.
I feel like it’d make a lot more sense to just send kids this sort of thing over email so they don’t have to worry about being humiliated by their peers.

2022.01.23 21:32 Fascist_Fashionista Fascist stereotypes in 40K

Hello everyone, inspired by this post, I wanted to post one of my undergraduate essay on how fascism is presented in Warhammer, and how fascist tropes and stereotypes are shown in the lore. I primarily used the 9th edition rulebook as my source because I consider it to be one of the most common entry point into the hobby. I've removed the intro and conclusion because I don't think its really needed here. I'm going to also pre-emptively apologize for my poor writing and grammar but I hope you enjoy it and let me know what you think.

The Imperium of Man can be seen as a fascist government in several ways. The Imperium was founded by the ‘God-Emperor of Mankind’ following his conquest of Earth, presented as a ‘unification’ in the lore.[1] This came after the ‘dark age of humanity’, in which following an uprising by humanities AI, resulted in the destruction of this empire.[2] Following the Emperor’s conquest he set out to reclaim all the territory lost during the age of strife, in which humanity was assaulted by several aliens. This expansion stopped however, with the Horus Heresy, in which the Emperor was mortally wounded and placed upon ‘the Golden Throne’ to ensure his survival.[3] From this, the cult of the emperor was created, in which he became a holy religious figure, considered to be the pinnacle of humanity.[4] From this it can be easily inferred that the Imperium is a fascist regime. Firstly, the veneration of the Emperor is similar to the presentation of fascist leaders in real life, which where presented as the pinnacle of their respective nations.[5] Due to Age of Strife and Horus Heresy, genetic impurity became a central fear in the Imperium.[6] This focus on genetic purity also played a substantial role in real-world fascist regimes, primarily focusing on Jews and Slavs in Europe.[7]
Focusing on the external sphere, the Imperium is unabashedly expansionist and genocidal. The Imperium does not conduct diplomacy with any alien life-form.[8] This plays into the conception that space is filled with unimaginable horrors that could potentially destroy humanity.[9] Humanities expansion is also presented as the Imperium rightfully reclaiming their lost territory, playing into the conception that space represents a form of ‘lebensraum’ for humanity.[10] Lebensraum is also term used by Nazi Germany as a justification to invade the Soviet Union, under the context of colonization.[11] Games Workshop also however, highlights that the Imperium is in many ways a decaying empire, fighting to ensure its survival. The lore presents the Imperium and its armies as being crushed under bureaucracy unable to effectively govern its outer worlds, instead resorting to brutal measures to maintain control.[12] However, despite this presentation, the lore also highlights that the Imperium is justified due to certain factions.
While much of the lore does condemn the imperium for its brutal nature, much of the lore also justifies this repression. Firstly, the lore justifies this brutal nature due to the characterization of the threats within the Imperium. Two factions, ‘Chaos’ and ‘Genestealer Cults’ both represent an existential threat to the inner workings of the Imperium. The Chaos cults represent an ideological threat to the Imperium, presenting a different philosophical basis that decries the Imperium’s brutality. Chaos cults are split between five different ideologies depending on who the cult worships presenting different potentials for the path of humanity.[13] While Games Workshop does in part justify the cults existence, presenting many of its members as those severely oppressed within the Imperium, it also presents these cults as in many ways worse than the Imperium. Chaos is shown to have an adverse effect on its followers, resulting in biological mutations, worshipping their gods with sacrifices and enact similarly brutal measures to the Imperium.[14] It could thus be said that Chaos represents both an ideological threat to the Imperium but also a genetic threat. This sought of messaging is also seen in Nazi propaganda, focusing on the threat of ‘bolshevism’ and Marxism.[15] As such, it can be inferred that the battle between Chaos and the Imperium, plays into tropes of good vs evil, but also plays into fascist views into the threat of ideological dissidence. As such, by making these threats a reality in-universe, the lore inadvertently spreads fascist propaganda.
The ‘Genestealer cults’ also represent an existential threat to the Imperium, but in a different way. The Genestealer represents a genetic threat to the ‘purity’ of man. Genestealers are a type of alien from the ‘Tyranids’ faction that are often used as shock troops in combat.[16] Outside of combat however, their purpose is to destabilize worlds in preparation for a Tyranid invasion. This is done by Genestealers kidnapping and ‘infecting’ someone with the creature’s genetic code, resulting in the subjects brainwashing as well as ‘corrupting’ their genetic code.[17] This victim will then recruit new members into the cult and spread this genetic impurity, resulting in the creation of new genestealers after 4 generations.[18] The eventual goal of the cult is to either weaken the planet or take it over, in preparation for the invasion of the Tyranids, during which the planet will be consumed.[19]
Looking at Nazi propaganda on race-mixing, particularly on its presentation of Jews, it is clear that there are many similarities between their representation and that of Genestealer cults. In Nazi propaganda, Jews were presented as a threat to the ‘Ayran’ race, with attempts by Nazi leadership to mobilize the German population to fight against them.[20] Similarly, Jews were presented as having ‘sold out’ Germany following the First World War, and as such were presented as a force to weaken Germany in preparation for German subjugation.[21] Genestealer cults could thus be seen as an allegory for Nazi ideas of Jewish domination in society, an idea that connects the aliens in Warhammer, with the ‘aliens’ in real life.[22] This however, means that the brutal nature of the Imperium is justified, while also playing a role in spreading Nazi propaganda.
The lore also justifies the brutal and xenophobic nature in the way it characterizes the other factions in the lore. Diplomacy is impossible between the executives of each faction, presenting it as an idealistic fantasy, and plays with the idea that only the Imperium can secure humanities future. This plays into two fascist tropes. First, it plays into the idea that diplomacy between groups is impossible, and that the natural state of the universe is conflict. Second, it plays into the idea of an alien menace, that only fascism can effectively solve.[23] As such, it could be said that the lore in part promotes fascist viewpoints regarding international relations. The presentation of humanities xenophobic tendencies is also at times confusing. At times, the lore will highlight the short-sighted nature of this xenophobia, particularly when dealing with other existential threats within the galaxy. However with every criticism thrown at Imperium diplomacy, the writers will place several justifications for that behaviour. As such, while the views are criticised, the writers present a false balance between the positives and negatives of Imperial diplomacy.
This confusing message surrounding the nature of fascism presents a problem for both the players and Games Workshop. During the resurgence of ‘Black Lives Matter’ in 2020, Games workshop released a statement showing its commitment to inclusivity within its community.[24] While this was met with praise from some members within the community, it was also met with substantial criticism and pushback.[25] This was in part due to the large amount of people who identify as ‘alt-right’ within the community. For example, one youtuber, launched an email campaign complaining that the statement by Games Workshop injected politics into the hobby, and was a sign that Games Workshop was surrendering to communists.[26] The Warhammer universe has also been used in real-world politics, with some of the presentations of Donald Trump being represented as the ‘God-Emperor’ of the Imperium.[27] It is clear to see from this that not only has Games Workshop failed to represent the flaws of both the Emperor and the Imperium he created, but also that this has resulted in the spread of intolerance within the community, which is then reflected in the real world. This is especially important considering the growth of Games Workshop, and by extension, Warhammer 40K, which outperformed its competitors substantially with a market capitalisation of more than one billion.[28] Popular culture has been used several times throughout history to spread a certain political agenda.[29] As such, the ideas presented in popular culture, especially if agreed upon by other institutions within society, can result in homogenisation, which can create the appearance of a consensus regarding certain ideas.[30] It is clear from this that Games Workshop inability to effectively critique fascism in the Warhammer world, has resulted not only in the spread and survival of far-right politics within the community, but also created a connection between Warhammer’s iconography and the far-right.
